  1. Biased Samples
    Samples that are more likely to produce some outcomes than others
  2. Convenience Samples
    • Samples that are easy to take
    • Often Biased -- easy to get, but may be different from population in general
  3. Volunteer Response Samples
    • self-selected sample of people who responded to a general appeal
    • Those who volunteer may be different from general population
  4. Simple Random Sample (SRS)
    a sample taken in such a way that every set of n items has an equal chance of being chosen
  5. Sampling Frame
    LIST of individuals from which we choose our sample
  6. Probability Samples
    • sampling methods that are based on method of randomness
    • E.g. Simple Random Sample
  7. Stratified Random Samples
    population is divided into groups (strata) and random samples are taken within those groups
  8. Cluster Samples
    • Population divided into naturally occurring group-clusters
    • Randomly select clusters of subjects and talk with all subjects in that group
    • More complex analysis than SRS
  9. Systematic Samples
    Select every kth item individual from the sampling frame
  10. Multi-Stage Samples
    Combination of sampling techniques
