Absolute Value
Show Answers:

  1. Absolute Value
How far a number is from zero.Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero. So, the absolute value of 6 is 6, andadf the absolute value of -6 is also 6.The symbol "|" is placed either side to mean "Absolute Value", so we can write: |-6| = 6
  2. Asymmetry
Asymmetry means "no symmetry".Something with no symmetry is asymmetrical. It is also possible to be symmetrical in one way and asymmetrical in another.
  3. Brackets
Brackets are symbols used in pairs to group things together. Types of brackets include: parentheses or "round brackets" ( ) "square brackets" or "box brackets" [ ] braces or "curly brackets" { }"angle brackets" < >Example: (3 + 2) x (6 - 4) = 5 x 2 = 10The Parentheses group 3 and 2 together, and 6 and 4 togetherNote: Angle brackets can be confusing because they look like the "less than" and "greater than" signs.
  4. Value
Money how much something is worth.Mathematics the result or 'output' of a calculation.Example: 3 × 4 gives the value of 12.
  5. Constant
A fixed value. In Algebra, a constant is a number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number. Example: in "x + 5 = 9", 5 and 9 are constantsIf it is not a constant it is called a variable.
  6. Variable
A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variableIf it is not a variable it is called a Constant
