  1. Sensory Function Exam
    • Subjective
    • Topographical organization
    • Testing considerations
    • Evaluation and documentation
  2. Subjective
    • Ask the patient to describe (map out areas) where sensation does not feel normal
    • Provide sensory clues
  3. Topographical Organization
    Use sensory dermatome chart
  4. Testing Considerations
    • Document key sensory systems: test superficial and proprioceptive sensations 1st, then combined (cortical sensations)
    • Ensure that pt comprehends instructions and can communicate responses
    • Occlude vision: consider barrier method (use piece of paper to block vision) vs blindfolding the pt
    • Apply stimulus in random, unpredictable order; avoid summation
    • To assess responses, always pose a choice (i.e. hot or cold)
    • Examine for objective manifestations: withdrawal, wincing, blinking)
    • Consider skin condition (calluses, scars) for areas of desensitivity
    • Look for signs of repetitive trauma, skin lesions
