1. Calculate the total linear meters in the following timber order: 200x50 Rough Sawn Hardwood 12@1.5m, 9@2.78m, 12@2.5m and 10@1.7m.
• Length:
• 1. 12x1.5=42m
• 2. 9x2.78=25.02m
• 3. 12x2.5=30m
• 4. 10x1.7=17m

• Total Length= L1+L2+L3+L4
•                   = 42+25.02+30+17
•                   = 114.02m

the total linear meters required for this is 114.02m.

2. As a building estimator, how many bricks would be required to build a wall 18.6 meters long by 2.8 meters high. The wall is one brick thick and there are 50 bricks per square meter.
• A=LxW
•   =18.6x2.8
•   =52.08m2

• No. of bricks required= Ax50
•                                = 52.08x50
•                                = 2604 bricks

2604 bricks will be required to build a wall that is 18m x 2.8m.

3. The walls of a lounge room which measures 12500 x 8700 are to be painted.  The room has one large entrance 2300 x 1800 and two windows 1900 x 1500.  The ceiling height of the room is 2600.  It is estimated that the net wall area will be less than 80 m². Is this estimation correct
• Aw1=(LxW)x2
•       =(12.5x2.6)x2
•       =65m2

• Aw2=(LxW)x2
•       =(8.7x2.6)x2
•       =45.24m2

•     =1.8x2.3
•     =4.14m2

• Aw=(LxW)x2
•      =(1.9x1.5)x2
•      =5.7m2

•                =(65+45.24)-(4.14+5.7)
•                =110.24-9.84
•                = 100.4m2

The total area for the walls is 100.4m2. Therefore the estimation of the wall area will be less than 80m2 is incorrect.

4. Below is a sketch (bird’s eye view, not drawn to scale) of the slab of a modern home.  Footings will be dug inside the slab and are 350mm wide and 550mm deep.  If concrete costs \$124 for the first cubic metre and then \$87/m3 thereafter will my estimate of \$2000 be correct?.  INCLUDE 10 % WASTAGE IN YOUR CALCULATIONS. Explain your reason mathematically.

• 1. 17.5m
• 2. 3-0.45-0.45=2.1m
• 3. 4.5+0.45=4.95m
• 4. 7-0.45=6.55m
• 5. 13m
• 6. 10-0.45-0.45=9.1m

Total Length= 53.2m

• Af=LxW
•    =53.2x0.35
•    =18.62m2

• Vf=AH
•    =18.62x0.55
•    =10.24m2

• Slab:
• A1=LxW
•     =13x10
•     =130m2

• A2=LxW
•     =4.5x3
•     =13.5m2

• Total Length= A1+A2
•                   = 130+13.5
•                   = 143.5m2

• Vs=AH
•     = 143.5x0.55
•     = 78.93m3

• Total Volume= Vf+Vs
•                    = 10.24+78.93
•                    = 89.17m3

• Wastage= T.V. x 110%
•             = 89.17x1.1
•             = 98.09m3

• Cost (1st m) = 124 x 1
•                    = \$124

• Cost (Thereafter) = m3x\$/m3
•                           = 97.09 x 87
•                           = \$8446.83

• Total Cost= Cost(1st)+Cost(there)
•               = 124 +8446.83
•               = \$8570.83

Therefore the estimation of \$2000 is incorrect. it will cost \$8570.83.
