  1. Diathesis-Stress Model
    • Diathesis-stress approach: genetic predisposition+ environmental stress= disorder
    • --> everyone has predisposition to illness; born with it; in order for disorder to manifest,y you need environmental stress

    the most at risk are homeless, abuse victims, and vets

    intense irrational fear of something; you know you shouldn't be afraid, but you are

    There are four: anything in the social atmosphere, social anxiety, specific phobia, specific object

    afraid to go outside

    severe anxiety with no reason/ always feel on eaedge
  11. Panic disorders
    mimc a heart attach
  12. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
    a constant thought that is intruding and the the act or behavior that a person feels must be carried out to avoid disaster
  13. Hoarding disorder
    afraid to throw thing away for fear they will be needed in the future
  14. Body Dysmorphic Disorder
    people who spend hours fixated on their flaws
  15. PTSD
    experiences a traumatic event and relives it; reexperiencing; avoidance; negative alterations in mood and cognitions; flashbacks
  16. Somatoform disorders
    • conversion disorder
    • somatic symptom disorder
  17. Conversion disorder
    you go deaf, blind, or experinece paralysis with no physical cause

  18. Somatic Symptom Disorder
    you have all the symptoms for something but no physical cause
  19. What are disociative disorders?
    rare conditions that involve sudden and temporary disruptions in a person's memory, consciousness, or identity
  20. Dissociative amnesia
    temporary loss of memory or identity for a small amount of time; can include creating a new identity altogether
  21. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
    creation of new identities; experiences a traumatic event-> shift yourself into others or other personalities

  23. Major Depressive Disorder
    characteristics: feeling hopeless, helpless, isoated, unworthy, dark, etc. may lead to suicide; must last 6 months to be diagnosed; hospiitalizations; meds; therapy
  24. Persistent Depressive Disorder
    less severe depresion that lasts about two years; symptoms are les severe; you are not suicidal, nor are you hospitalized
  25. Mania?
    incredibly impulsive risk taking
  26. Bipolar I
    major depression and major mania
  27. Bipolar II
    major depresion and minor mania

  29. Cyclothymic disorder

  30. Schizophrenia
    you are out of touch with reality; live in own world and have a huge struggle with life with difficulty communicating with others

    diagnosed: early and late 20s for males and females respectively

    the better functioning you are prior to schizo, the better treatable it is

    1) Disorganized thought and language: neologisms (creation of new words), loose/ clang associations (one word doesn't make sense with the word that comes after it); word salad

    • 3) Delusions of Grandeur: Put selves on pedestal

    • 5) Thought Blocking/ Withdrawing: ou reach into my head and take thoughts out of me
    • 6) Thought Insertion: you put your thoughts into my head
