  1. Resistance
    • Electrical Impedance
    • Opposition To Flow Of Electrical Current
    • Measured In Ohms
    • Increased resistance when dry out
    • Decrease resistance when push on it increasing voltage; clean skin
  2. Ohm’s Law
    Current Flow= Voltage / Resistance (I= VR)
  3. Watt
    • Measure of Electrical Power
    • Watts = Volts X Amps
    • Modalities Use Milliamps or Microamps
  4. Electrotherapeutic Currents
    • Direct DC or monophasic (galvanic)
    • Alternating (AC)
    • Pulsed current
  5. Direct (DC) or Monophasic (Galvanic)
    • Flow of Electrons Always In Same Direction
    • Sometimes Called (used for Iontophoresis and Low Intensity DC (LIDC) for wound healing
  6. Alternating (AC)
    • Continuous sinusoidal current
    • Top half circle goes from cathode to anode, bottom half circle goes from anode to cathode
  7. Pulsed Current
    • Individual isolated electrical events of short duration separated by interpulse intervals.
    • Most often,ranging from 50-100 pps
    • Stimulate muscle
  8. Types of Electrical Generators
    • All Are Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulators
    • Can be powered by AC ORDC current
    • 1. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)
    • 2. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulator (NMES) = Electrical Muscle Stimulator (EMS)
    • 3. Microcurrent Electrical Nerve Stimulators (MENS) = Low Intensity Stimulators (LIS)
  9. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)
Small unit used for pain control
  10. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulator (NMES) = Electrical Muscle Stimulator (EMS)
    Stimulate muscle
  11. Microcurrent Electrical Nerve Stimulators (MENS) = Low Intensity Stimulators (LIS)
    • Microcurrent used for pain, inflammation
    • Don’t cause any depolarization So don’t feel anything
  12. Batteries
    • DC between 1.5 and 9 V
    • So have small pumps
    • Limit amp you can get
  13. Wall Outlet (Line driven)
    • AC at 120 or 220V at 60 Hz
    • Bigger unit, bigger pump
    • Can depolarize/ stimulate more
    • For strengthening of muscle when weak muscles that cant contract
    • Need 60% 1 rep max to get hypertrophy
  14. Pulse
    Individual isolated electrical event
