  1. hematopoesis
    • growing and maturing of RBC
    • stem cells > differentiation >
    • negative feedback loop: decrease RBC> kidneys> erythropoietin > increase RBC
  2. RBC lives for
120days > lysed > macrophages > spleen and liver > coverted to bilirubin
  3. s/sx of mild anemia
    • hgb:10-14g/dl
    • might not feel it at all (if develop slow)
    • fatigue!
    • exertional sob
    • sweating
  4. (normo)cytic
    • normal size RBC
    • micro: small
    • macro: large
  5. (normo)chromic
    • normal color RBC
    • hypo: pale
    • hyper: too dark?
  6. s/sx of moderate anemia
    • hgb: 6-10
    • palpitations
    • sob
    • insomnia
    • muscle cramp
    • pica
  7. s/sx of severe anemia
    • hgb: <6
    • tachycardia
    • chest pain, MI, heart failure
    • sob at rest
    • jaundice
  8. RBC homeostasis
    RBC production = RBC destruction
  9. iron def anemia
    • microcytic/hypochromic
    • bad diet, malabsorption issues, blood loss
    • pale, mouth problems
  10. lab studies for iron def anemia
    • low hgb
    • low mcv
    • low serum FE
    • occult blood (bleed), bone marrow bx
  11. max absorption for iron
    • empty stomach with vitamin C
    • hard on the stomach tho
  12. megaloblastic anemia
    • production of large RBC
    • deformed RBC > weak > easily destroyed
    • vit b12 and folic acid deficiencies
  13. b12 def s/sx
    • anemia, NV,
    • neuromuscular: muscle weakness
  14. vit B12 deficiency
    • need IF (intrinsic factor) to absorb B12
    • No IF: pernicious anemia, remove stomach, vegan
  15. pernicious anemia
    • stomach doesn't secrete IF
    • B12 cannont be absorbed
  16. schilling test
    • radio B12 admin > decrease B12 in urine > absorption issue
    • radio B12 and IF > increase B12 in urine >pernicious anemia
  17. lab tests for B12 and folic acid def
    • decreased hgb
    • increase MCV
    • decreased serum colalamin (normal folic)
    • decreased serum folate (normal B12)
  18. folic acid s/sx
same as B12 def but no neuromuscular problems
  19. pancytopenia
decrease in all WBC, HGB, platelets
  20. normal hgb
    13-18
