  1. matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
  2. volume
a measure of the size of a body or region in three dimensional space
  3. meniscus
the curve at a liquids surface by which one measures the volume of the liquid
  4. mass
a measure of the amount of matter in an object
  5. weight
a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object; its value can change with the location of the object in the universe.
  6. inertia
the tendency of an object to resist being moved or, if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object.
  7. density
the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
  8. atom
the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
  9. electron
a subatomic particle that has a negative charge.
  10. nucleus
in physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons
  11. electron cloud
a region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are likely to be found.
  12. proton
a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
  13. atomic mass unit
a unit of mass that describes the mass of an atom or molecule
  14. neutron
a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
  15. ion
atom that becomes a charged particle
  16. atomic number
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the atomic number is the same for all atoms of an element.
  17. isotope
an atom that has the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element do but that has a different number of neutrons.
  18. mass number
the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
  19. atomic mass
the mass of an atom expressed in atomic mass units.
  20. periodic
describes something that occurs/repeats regular leads.
  21. periodic law
    repeating chemical and physical properties.
  22. period
    a horizontal row of elements
  23. group
vertical column of elements in the periodic table.
  24. element
a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
  25. pure substance
a sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound that has definite chemical and physical properties.
  26. compound
a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
  27. mixture
a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
  28. solution
a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phrase.
  29. solute
in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent
  30. solvent
in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves.
  31. concentration
the amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture, solution, or ore.
  32. solubility
the ability of one substance to dissolve in another at a given temperature and pressure
  33. suspension
a mixture in which particles of a material are more or less exactly  dispersed throughout a liquid or gas
  34. colloid
a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspense and that are suspended in a liquid, solid, or gas.
