  1. diffusion
is sufficient for transport of materials in small animals; large animals need a circulatory sytem
  2. open circulatory system
means that blood leaves the blood vessels
  3. closed circulatory system
    • means that blood is always in blood vessels
    • moves blood around the body faster
    • allows alterations in blood flow to body organs
  4. arteries
    • carry blood away from the heart
    • have high pressure
    • have thick walls
    • do not have valves
    • have narrow lumens
    • carry oxygen-rich blood (except for the pulmonary artery)
  5. veins
    • carry blood to the heart
    • have low pressure
    • have thin walls
    • large lumens
    • have valves
    • carry oxygen-poor blood (except pulmonary vein)
  6. capillaries
connect arteries to veins, have thin walls and allow exchange of materials
  7. double circulation means that blood flows;
    • from the heart to the lungs and then back to the heart (pulmonary circuit)
    • from the heart to the rest of the body and back to the heart (systemic circuit)
  8. the pacemaker
(SA node) found in the wall of the right atrium and controls heartbeat
  9. diastole
is when the heart is relaxed
  10. systole
    is when the heart contracts
  11. Stages of heartbeat
    • diastole: blood enters the atria
    • atrial systole: blood is pumped to the ventricles
    • ventricular systole: blood is pumped out of the heart
  12. Pulse
    • caused by the expansion and contraction of an artery as blood is forced through it
    • is caused by ventricular systole
  13. blood pressure
    • is the force of blood against the walls of the arteries.
    • Normally the higher value is a measure of the systolic pressure; the lower value is a measure of the diastolic pressure
  14. ECG
(electrocardiogram) it is a record of the electrical activity of the heart when electrodes are placed on the chest
  15. portal system
is a blood pathway that begins and ends in the capillaries
