  1. NUCLEAR FAMILY UNIVERSAL
No, only in patriarchal society that requires oppression of women

    Very similar to marxists
  2. CHILDHOOD
    • Gender differences persist in spite of other changes
    • For example; girls are controlled by their parents more than boys and do more housework than boys
  3. CONJUGAL ROLES
    • Conjugal roles are still patriarchal as women still have less power despite having more responsibilities  e.g. dual burden and triple shift (oakley)
    • liberal feminists: some improvements to conjugal roles have happened however children are still encouraged to live to gender stereotypes due to their gender role socialisation
    • Radical feminists: no changes have occurred. Men maintain their dominant position through the threat of violence
  4. GRANDPARENTS
    • Opposite to new right
    • Gender role socialisation has meant that our society expects women to take on carer roles
    • The worry is that this will reverse the gains that women have made in employment from grandparents taking on childcare
    • Instead they will be forced out at a later stage in their careers to take care for elderly relatives
    • Older females are more vulnerable to elder abuse due to their longer life expectancies
  5. THE PURPOSE OF FAMILY
    • Oppresses women
    • Socialisation of children to recognise gender roles
    • Reproduction
    • Provides free labour
