  1. FUNCTIONALIST
Identity is based on social position, knowing your place and understanding your duty to society.

    • Gives us purpose
    • knowing our expectations
    • Social position
    • Stable position in society
  2. MARXISM
Identity is based on social class as it has significant influence on an individuals access to income, this in turn will influence consumption. Poverty will limit any desire to pursue a postmodern lifestyle, this lifestyle therefore is restricted to the middle class

Working class can't afford a postmodern lifestyle
  3. POSTMODERNISM
Identity is no longer a stable base; it is merely the result of on going choices and diversity. There are no lasting identities so the main aim of the citizen is to enjoy life.

However there are still expectations - e.g. employment - no stable base for identity.
  4. FEMINISM
The common experience of sexism provides a basis for a shared identity for women. Gender issues continue to impact on women's lives and their formation of identities.
