    ALLITERATION
    The repetition of consonant sound within a line of peotry.  "Peter Piper picked..." Is alliterative for the repetition of the "p" sound.
  2. 2.

    ASSONANCE
    The repetition of the same vowel sound, yet not rhyming, within a line of poetry.  For example, MOON, BLUE, BROOM - same vowel sound, yet they don't rhyme.  ALSO, FEET, BLEED, GREEN is an example.
  3. 3.

    COUPLET
    A two line stanza that usually rhymes.
  4. 4.

    IMAGERY
    The use of words or phrases that create pictures in the reader's mind.  Although visual imagery is the most common form, imagery may appeal to any of the senses so imagery includes not only what it LOOKS like, but also how does it sound, taste, smell, or feel.
  5. 5.

    METAPHOR
    A figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one object or idea is applied to another, thereby suggesting a likeness or analogy between them.  For example, "You are the sunshine of my life."
  6. 6.

    OXYMORON
    Two words that were opposite each other but still make sense.  For example, hot ice, pretty ugly, Dodge Ram.
  7. 7.

    PERSONIFICATION

    Image Upload
    Giving human like qualities to inanimate objects.  For example, "My car was happy to get washed!"  And, "The sun smiled on our picnic."

    (Think of the root word personify which sounds like person fly to give you a hint of the meaning.)
  8. 8.

    RHYME
    Words having the same vowel sound AND the same consonant ending.  For example, moon and tune, black and flack, green and mean.  Notice that rhyme is about SOUND and not what LETTERS are used.
  9. 9.

    SITUATIONAL IRONY
    When the opposite happens that is expected to happen given the circumstances.  Example:  if the fire station burned down or if a life guard drowned.
  10. 10.

    SYNESTHESIA
    Speaking of one thing using a sense not usually used in that way.
