  1. Bioenergetics
The flow of energy in a biological system

The conversion of macronutrients into biologically usable form if energy.
  2. Catabolism
    The breakdown of large molecules,

Associated with the release of energy.
  3. Anabolism
The synthesis of larger molecules from smaller molecules.

Can be accomplished using the energy released from the catabolic reactions.
  4. Exergonic Reactions
Energy-releasing reactions that are generally catabolic in nature.
  5. Endergonic Reactions
Require energy and include anabolic processes and the contraction of muscle.
  6. Adenosine Triphosphate
    ATP
  7. 3 Basic Energy Systems
    • Phosphagen
    • Glycogen
    • Oxidative
  8. Phosphagen System
Provides ATP primarily for short-duration, high intensity activities

Active at the start of all exercise regardless of intensity

Uses the creatine kinase reaction to maintain the concentration of ATP

This is controlled by the law of mass action.
