  1. Psychostimulant Drugs:

    amphetamines
    methylphenidate (Ritalin)
  2. Psychostimulant Uses:
    Used to treat Narcolepsy and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  3. Amphetamines Side Effects:
    • restlessness
    • insomnia
    • poor appetite
    • tremor
    • palpitations
    • cardiac arrhythmia

    *Repeated use produces tolerance and can result in sensitization.

    *Prolonged use can lead to psychotic state similar to Paranoid Schizophrenia. Recovery from "amphetamin psychosis" rapid after discontinuing the drug.
  4. Methylphenidate Side Effects:
    • dysphoria (anxiety, irratibility, depression, euphoria, sadness)
    • decreased appetite
    • insomnia
    • growth suppression in higher doses ("drug holiday" reduces risk)
