  1. Long-term care
    The broad range of medical, custodial, social, and other care services that assist people who have impaired ability to live independently for an extended period of time.
  2. Acute care
    Medical care received for a relatively brief time for a severe episode of illness, an accident or other trauma, or receovery from surgery. Acute care is usually given in a hospital.
  3. Skilled care
    Medial care services that may be provided or available 24 hours a day or on a daily basis. The most common setting for skilled care is in a nursing home that is classified as a skilled-nursing facility. Also known as skilled-nursing care.
  4. Intermediate care
    Medical care services that may be provided or available perhaps 2 to 4 days per week. Intermediate care may be provided in a nursing home, an intermediate-care unit of a nursing home, or at home. Also known as intermediate-nursing care.
  5. Custodial care
    Assistance given to a person who has limited ability to conduct his/her routine daily activities because of deficiencies in physical and/or cognitive functions. Persons without professional medical skills or training can usually provide custodial care. Also known as personal care.
  6. Activities of daily living (ADLs)
    Physical functions that are the basic and necessary tasks of everyday life and usually include eating, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, maintaining continence, and or transfering into or out of a bed, chair, or wheelchair. Compare instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).
  7. Cognitive functions
    Activites that pertain to the mental processes of comprehension, judgement, memory, and reasoning.
  8. Instrumental activites of daily living (IADLs)
    Necessary and routine activities of life that require a greater degree of skill, judgement, and independence than activities of daily living (ADLs) and include shopping for personal items, managing money, using the phone, preparing meals, managing medication, and doing housework. Compare activities of daily living (ADLs).
  9. Social care
    Services that help maintain an individual's personal interactions and identity as a member of a community.
  10. Sandwich generation
    Persons who at the same time are caring for their own children as well as aging parents or relatives.
