  1. Antiviral drugs are
drugs that combat viral infections. work by interfering with the virus's ability to reproduce in a cell.
  2. Antiviral drugs are used in treatment or prevention of infections cause by:
    • Cytomegalovirus ((CMV) in tranplant recipients
    • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2 (genital) and herpes zoster
    • HIV
    • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV; severe lower respiratory tract infection primarily affecting children)
    • Hep B and C
  3. Unlabeled use is
use of a drug to treat a condition which is not officially approved by the FDA.
  4. Retrovirus is a
virus that uses RNA as its primary component instead of DNA.
  5. Contain an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that is used
to turn the RNA of the virus into DNA, helping to reproduce more of the virus.
  6. Highly Active Antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is
multiple drugs used together for treatment of HIV infection.
  7. Types of Drugs used in HAART are
    • Protease inhibitors-which block the protease enzyme so new viral particles cannot mature
    • Reverse transcriptase inhibitors- which block the reverse transcriptase enzyme so the HIV material can not change into DNA in the new cell
    • Entry inhibitors-which prevent the attachment or fusion of HIV to a cell such as CCR5 inhibitors
  8. Circumoral area is
    around the mouth.
