  1. Salivary Glands
    (3 Types)
    • three pairs of exocrine glands in the mouth that secrete saliva
    • - 3 types: parotid, submandibular (submaxillary), & sublingual
  2. Pharynx
    • - thoat
    • - passageway for food traveling the the esophagus & air traveling to the larynx
  3. Stomach
    (2 Sphincters)
    • sac-like organ that chemically mixes & prepares food received from the esophagus

    • opening form the esophagus to the stomach

    • 8 parts: cecum, vermiform appendix, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, rectal ampulla

  9. Vermiform Appendix
    • large intestine
    • - worm-like projection of lymphatic tissue hanging off the cecum with no digestive function
    • - may serve to resist infection
    • - (vermi= worm)
  10. Sigmoid Colon
    • large intestine
    • - portion (resembling an s) that terminates at the rectum
  11. Rectal Ampulla
    • large intestine
    • - dilated portion of the rectum just above the anal canal
  12. Peritoneum
    • membrane surrounding the entire abdominal cavity
    • - consists of: parietal layer (lining the abdominal wall), visceral layer (covering each organ in the abdomen)
  13. Peritoneal Cavity
    space between the parietal & visceral peritoneum
  14. Omentum
    • - a covering
    • - an extension of the peritoneum attached to the stomach & connecting it with other abdominal organs
  15. Liver
    • organ in the upper right quadrant
    • - produces bile, which is secreted into the duodenum during digestion
  16. Gallbladder
    receptacle that stores & concentrates the bile produced in the liver
  17. Pancreas
    gland that secretes pancreatic juice into the duodenum, where it mixes with bile to digest food
  18. Biliary Ducts
    (3 types)
    • ducts that convey bile
    • - 3 types: hepatic, cystic, & common bile ducts
  19. Hypochondriac Regions
    upper lateral regions beneath the ribs
  20. Epigastric Region
    upper middle region below the sternum
  21. Lumbar Regions
    middle lateral regions
  22. Umbilical Region
    region of the navel
  23. Inguinal Region
    lower lateral groin region
  24. Hypogastric Region
    region below the navel
