What did the periodontal ligament start out as?
the dental sac
Where is the periodontal ligament derived from?
the mesoderm
the fibrous connective tissue that attaches the tooth to the bone
periodontal ligament
how does the periodontal ligament appear on a radiograph?
a radiolucent area
What is the periodontal ligament referred to as on a radiograph?
periodontal space
Why do we know how hard to bite on things?
because the periodontal ligament transmits occlusal surfaces, and it feels if we bite too hard
What type of sensations can the periodontal disease detect? (4)
pressure
pain
touch
temperature
What type of tissue is the PDL?
connective tissue
true or false. There are nerves in the periodontal ligament or periodontal space
true
What are 5 components of the PDL?
intercellular substance
blood vessels
nerves
cells
fibers
What do the blood vessels in the PDL supply nutrients to?
alveolus
cementum
pulp of the tooth (once the vessels enter the apical foramen)
what type of nerves are in the PDL?
afferent sensory nerves
Name 4 types of cells found in the PDL
fibroblasts
osteoblasts/clasts
cementoblasts/clasts
epithelial rests of malassez
typical connective tissue cells found in the PDL
fibroblasts
cells in the PDL that are located along the periphery of alveolar bone they can build/destroy bone
osteoblasts/clasts
where are the osteoblasts and clast cells located?
along the periphery of cementum
cells in the PDL that are located along the periphery of cementum, and can build/destroy cementum
cementoblasts/clasts
Where are the cementoblasts and clasts located?
along the periphery of cementum
these cells started out as HERS, but got lost
epithelial rests of malassez
true or false. epithelial rests of malassez can be cystic
true
cells composed of bundles of fibers that connect the bone to the tooth with sharpey's fibers
fibers
What are 2 clinical considerations with the periodontal ligament?
occlusal trauma
periodontal disease
What are 2 examples of occlusal trauma that will put extra forces on the PDL?
clenching
grinding
What will the PDL do to help withstand forces from clenching or grinding?
it will widen
What happens to the fibers of the PDL in periodontal disease?
they get disorganized and lose their attachment
What causes the fibers in the periodontal ligament to get disorganized and lose their attachment in periodontal disease?
resorption of the bone and cementum
