  1. Prerenal AKI physical exam findings
    • VITAL SIGNS: Orthostatic hypotension (blood pressure decreases upon standing secondary to volume depletion)
    • SKIN: Tenting (volume depletion), edema (volume overload)
    • HEENT: Elevated JVP (volume overload)
    • HEART: Abnormal heart sounds (heart failure - volume overload)
    • LUNGS: Rales (crackles in lungs due to fluid accumulation)
    • ABDOMEN: Ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity secondary to liver failure)
  2. Intrinsic AKI physical exam findings
    • VITAL SIGNS: fever (possible infection)
    • SKIN: Rash (allergic reaction)
    • HEART: new or increased heart murmur (infection of the heart - endocarditis)
  3. Postrenal AKI physical exam findings
    • ABDOMEN: bladder distention (sign of obstruction)
    • GENITOURINARY: prostate enlargement (prostatic hypertrophy or cancer)
    • GYNECOLOGIC: abnormal exam (urethral obstruction or cervical cancer)
  4. Drugs that may cause/exacerbate AKI
    ACE inhibitors, ARBs, NSAIDs, contrast dye
  5. drugs with a sulfonamide group
    • CA inhibitors: acetazolamide
    • Loop diuretics: furosemide, torsemide, bumetanide
    • Thiazide diuretics: ALL
