  1. Windows
    Operating system
  2. window
    Rectangular area on the screen used by an application program to work with files or interact with the user.
  3. GUI
    Graphical User Interface
  4. Cumputer icon
    Shortcut to the computer window. Gives access to drives, files and folders on your computer
  5. Desktop
    Basic screen from which Windows and applications are run. Consists of program icons, a taskbar, a Start button, an optional Windows Sidebar, and a mouse pointer
  6. Notification area
    An area on the right side of the taskbar that keeps you informed about processes that are running in the background, such as antivirus software, network connections, and other utility programs. Also typically displays the time.
  7. Quick Launch toolbar
    An area to the right of the Start button that contains shortcut icons for commonly used programs
  8. Recycle Bin
    Shortcut to the Recycle Bin, which is a storage area for files that have been deleted from the hard drive. Files can be recovered from the Recycle Bin or permanently removed from the computer.
  9. Taskbar
    A bar, usually at the bottom of the screen, that contains the Start button, buttons representing open programs, and other buttons that activate programs.
  10. Windows Sidebar
    An area on the side of the screen that displays information you want to access quickly. Gadgets may be added to the Windows Sidebar that display information such as weather or stock market data.
  11. If Quick Launch toolbar does not display,
    Right-click in an open area of the taskbar, then click Properties. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, under Taskbar appearance, select the Show Quick Launch check box.
  12. Ribbon
    In Micorsoft Office 2007, the area containing groups of commands and command buttons. In other programs, a menu bar displays in this area.
  13. Status bar
    The bar at the bottom of a window that gives additional information about the window.
  14. Task pane
    A pane that opens on the side of a window and is used to display commonly used tools
  15. Title bar
    The bar at the top of a window that contains the name of the application and document, along with the Minimize, Maximize/Restore Down, and Close buttons.
  16. Toolbar
    A bar, usually just under a menu bar, that contains command options. These commards are buttons with icons or words. More than one bar may be displayed at once and they may share the same row.
  17. Dialog box
    Similar to a window, but used for a specific purpose and requires an action.
  18. Shutting down the computer by using the keyboard.
    Press Start button. Press right arrow three times to display the menu, then celect Shut Down.

    advanced graphical user interface introduced in Vista.

    Word files - 4 letter files from Office 2007

    Excel files - 4 letter files from Office 2007

  23. If can't find a file part 1.
    Could be not sufficiently descriptive file name. Name file using words that match closely. Also can do advanced search and look for unusual word or phrase that you know is in the file.

    Other possible reason can't find a file is that the file is hidden. To locate a hidden file, in the Computer window, click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Option. Click the View button and then click then click the Show hidden files and folders option button. Then, do an advanced search and include hidden files.
  25. Identifying which files can be found in the recycle bin
    Only files deleted from hard drive. Not flash or other portable media.
  26. Displaying File extensions
    By default, Windows hides the 3 or 4-letter file extensions for known file types and assigns them automatically when you save files from within an application. To change the default setting to display file extensions for all files, click Start, and then click computer. On the Command bar, click the Organize button, click Folder and Search Options, and then click the View tab. Under Advanced Settings, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
  27. Navigation pane
    The area on the left side of a folder window that that enables you to view the folder structure in a vertical list. In the Computer window, displays the Favorites lis and the Folders list.
  28. Address bar
    Displays your current location in the folder structure as a series of links separated by arros
  29. Column heading
    These identify the column; click on the headings to sort the file list.
  30. Command bar
    Toolbar that provides buttons to perform common tasks
  31. Favorites list
    A list of commonly used folders
  32. Folders list
    Displays a list of folders that are contained within the selected folder.
