What is word root?
foundation of a medical term and contains its primary meaning.
What is a combining form?
word root + vowel
usually and o but sometimes an i
What is a suffix?
a word element at the end of the word that changes the meaning of the word.
What does the Greek word roots used to build?
diesease, condition, treatment, or diagnosis
What does the Latin word roots used to build?
words that describe anatomical structures
What is prefix?
word element attached to the beginning of a word or word root.
What are the 3 steps to defining medical words?
- 1. define the suffix
- 2. define the first part of the word (combining form, word root, or prefix)
- 3. define the middle parts of the word
What is the first rule to building medical words?
a word root links a suffix that begins with a vowel
What is the second rule to building medical words?
a combining form (root + o) links a suffix that begins with a consonant
What is the third rule to building medical words?
a combining form links a root to another root to form a compound word.
