    Narcotic agonist, analgesic
  2. Mechanism of Action
    Potent, short acting, synthetic narcotic agonist analgesic. Analgesia and sedation. Inhibits ascending pain pathways in CNS, increases pain threshold, and alters pain perception.

  4. Contraindications
    Myasthenia gravis, hypersensitivity to opiates, MAOI use
  5. Precautions
    Increased ICP, severe respiratory disores, hypotension, bradydysrhythmias
  6. Side Effects
    • Severe respiratory depression
    • Bronchoconstriction
    • Chest-wall rigidity
    • Sedation
    • Bradycardia
    • Diaphoresis
    • N/V
    • Miosis
    • Blurred vision
    • Hypotension
    • Cardiac arrest
  7. Interactions
    Effects increased with other CNS depressants. MAOI use may cause hypotension
  8. Dose and Route
    Adult: 25-50 mcg slow IVP or IM q 5 max 150 mcg

    Pedi: 0.5 mcg/kg slow IVP q 5 mins max 1.5 mcg/kg
  9. Pharmacokinetics
    • Absorption = immediate
    • Duration = 30-60 hours
    • Half-life = 1.5-6 hours
