The flashcards below were created by user Joelypro on FreezingBlue Flashcards. What would you like to do?

  1. List characteristics of metals
    • Malleable, ductile, shiny, high melting point/boiling point, solid at room temperature (except murcury), conductor of heat and energy

  2. List characteristics of non-metals
    • Not malleable, bot ductile, not shiny, low melting/boiling point, liquid or gass at room temperature, bad conductor of heat and energy

  3. What is a good semi-conductor?
    • Metalloid

  4. Metals ......... Electrons resulting in a ....... Ion
    • Metals lose electrons, resulting in a positive ion

  5. Metals exist as a .... of ..... charged .... in a sea of ...... electrons
    • Metals exist as a lattive of positively charged ions in a sea of delocalised electrons

  6. What are Alloys?
    • Substances that come from metallic elements, and are tailor made to have properties to suit a particular purpose

  7. 2 Examples of Alloys:
    • 1) The sink that wont rust is stainless steel
    • 2) Lead conducts electricity well, but its melting point is very high. Alloying with tin allows cood conductivity, and a low melting point. Hence its great for soulder.

  8. How do you find the mass of a neutron?
    • Mass of proton+Mass of electron

  9. How do you find the mass number of an element?

Number of protons + Number of neutrons

  10. What is an isotope?
    • Atoms of the same element (same atomic & proton number) but with a different number of neutrons.

  11. Name one famous isotope:
    • Carbon-14

  12. What will a charged non-metal end in?
    • 'Ide'

  13. Non-metal ions will always be...
    • Negative charge, and ending with IDE
