    Stores energy from electron transfer as an ion gradient across the membrane of the cell/organelle
  2. What is the citric acid cycle? + related processes
    • a metabolic pathway involved in the chemical conversion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins into carbon dioxide and water to generate a form of usable energy.
    • glycolysis and pyruvate oxidation before the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation after it
  3. What is glycolysis? What is precursor molecule? What is product? Where does product go?
    Glycolysis - Metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate
  4. 1st Steps in the Bacterial Proton Motive Force
    • Strip - oxidoreductase recieves a pair of e- (usually from NADH which gets them from organic catabolism). each e- travels through FMN + iron sulfer series and are transferred to Quinones (ubiquinone --> ubiquinol)
    • energy transfer pumps out 4 H+
  5. 2nd Step in Bacterial Proton Motive Force
    Pump - A Quinone recieves 2 e- from oxidoreductase (Ubiquinone is reduced to ubiquinol) and transfers them to terminal oxidase

    Energy transfer pumps 2 H's out per quinone
  6. 3rd step in Bacterial Proton Motive Force
    Dump - Terminal oxireductase recieves e- from quinols and transfers them to terminal electron acceptor

    2 H's are pumped out
  7. Terminal electron acceptors (4 types)
    Nitrogenous, sulfer, methanogenesis (uses CO2 final acceptor), and oxygen
