    • Salt that dissociates into magnesium cation (MG2+) and the sulfate anion when administered.
    • Essential in numerous biochemical reactions that occur within the body
    • Calcium Channel Blocker
    • Smooth muscle dilator
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • Central nervous system depressant
    • Anticonvulsant
    • Anti-dysrhythmic
    • Bronchodilator
  4. Onset of Action:

    • Duration:1 hour
    • Half-Life:Not applicable
  5. Indications:
    • Cardiac - Serve refractory V-Fib or Pulseless V-Tach,
    • torsade de pointes

    Respiratory - Bronchospasm, Asthma

    OB - Ecclampsia
  6. Contraindications:
    • Shock
    • Heart Block
    • Severe Hypertension
    • Third degree heart block
    • AV block
    • Hypercalcemia
    • Dialysis
  7. Precautions
    • Patients receiving Digitalis
    • Hypotension
    • Calcium Chloride readily available
    • Patients with renal failure
  8. Side Effects
    • Flushing
    • Respiratory depression
    • Drowsiness,
    • Dysrhythmias
    • Hypotension
    • Itching
    • Rash
    • Sweating
    • Bradycardia
  9. Adult Dose:
    • Respiratory:
    • 2 g over 2-5 minutes

    • V-Fib and V-Tach:
    • 1-2 g diluted in 10 ml of D5W administered slowly over 1-2 minutes IVP.

    • Torsade de Pointes:
    • 5 to 10 g diluted in 100 ml of D5W, administered at rate of 1 g/min
    • until dysrhythmias is suppressed or max dose is reach

    • OB:
    • 1-2g in 1000ml run wide open

    IV, IO, IM
