    Calcium Supplement
  2. Description:
    Provides elemental calcium in the form of the cation (Ca2+). Calcium is required for many physiological activities.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Replaces calcium in cases of hypocalcemia, Increases cardiac contractility
  4. Onset of Action:
    • Onset: Immediate
    • Peak: Unknown
    • Duration: Varies
    • Half-Life: Not applicable
  5. Indications:
    Acute hyperkalemia, Acute hypocalcemia, Calcium channel blocker overdose, Abdominal muscle spasm associated with spider bite and Portuguese man-of-war stings, Elevated T-Waves(Indicator of hyperkalemia and renal failure hyperkalemia.)
  6. Contraindications:
    Pts receiving digitalis
  7. Precautions
    IV line should be flush between calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate administration. Extravasation may cause tissue necrosis
  8. Side Effects
    Dysrhythmias (bradycardia and Asystole), hypotension, nausea/vomiting, syncope
  9. Adult Dose
    2-4 mg/kg of a 10% solution, may be repeated at 10 minute intervals
  10. Pedi-Dose:
    5-7 mg/kg of a 10% solution (high blood serum levels is why pedi dose is higher (don’t need to know for quiz)
  11. Max Dose:
    Adult 2-4 mg/kg (Not worry about pedi)
  12. Routes of Administration
    IV/IO
  13. How Supplied:
    1g Vials
