  1. Class:
    Corticosteroid
  2. Description:
    A synthetic steroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Potent anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit many substances that cause inflammation and also inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory enzymes.
  4. Onset of Action:
    • Onset: varies
    • Peak: 4-8 days
    • Duration: 1-5 weeks (IM)
    • Half-Life: 3.5 hours
  5. Indications
    Serve anaphylaxis, asthma, or COPD, and Urticaria
  6. Contraindications
    No major contraindications in the acute management of serve anaphylaxis
  7. Precautions
    Only one dose pre-hospital should be given, Long term therapy can cause GI bleeding, prolonged wound healing, and suppression of adrenocortical steroids
  8. Side Effects
    • Abdominal distention
    • CHF
    • Fluid retention
    • Headache
    • Hiccups
    • Hypertension
    • Malaise
    • Nausea
    • Vertigo
  9. Adult Dose:
    Serve anaphylaxis- 125-250 mg administered IV. Can be given IM but IV is preferred in EMS
  10. Pedi-Dose:
    30 mg/kg
  11. Max Dose:
    Pre-hospital is one dose 125-250 mg
  12. Routes of Administration
    IV/IO/IM
  13. How Supplied
    Prefilled syringes or vials with 250mg OR 125mg
