  1. Autonomic nervous system
    • * Autonomic nervous system (ANS) is an involuntary branch of the nervous system
    • * Consists of motor nerves that innervate smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, gland
    • * Regulation heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, body tempature´┐Ż
    • * Dividecd into two branches
    • o Sympathetic division
    • o Parasympathetic division
    • * Both have antagonistic functions
  2. Sympathetic Nervous system
    • * Known as "fight or flight"
    • * Active during emergency situations
    • * Originates from T1 to T2
    • * Short preganglionic and long postganglionic neurons
    • * Uses epinephrine or norepinephrine to act on the effector
    • * Takes control to increase activities
    • [excersise, stress, scared]
  3. Parasympathetic Nervous system
    • * Known as "rest and digest"
    • * Originates from the brain stem and S1-S4 sacral
    • * Uses acetylcholine as a neurontransmitter
    • * Long preganglionic and short postganglionic
    • * Takes control when body is at rest to decrease activities
  4. Differences between somatic and autonomic nervous systems
    • * Nerves
    • o Somatic: one motor neuron
    • o Autonomic: preganglionic and postpanglionic neurons
    • * Effector organs
    • o Somatic: skeletal muscles
    • o Autonomic: smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and glands
    • * Neurotransmitter
    • o Somatic: acetylcholine
    • o Autonomatic: acetylcholine, epinephrine, or norepinephrine
