  1. 7. Steps to IV infusion.
    • 1. open VI bag and tubing
    • 2. close flow-reg screw on tubing
    • 3. remove protective cover from entryport on IV bag and piercing pin on tubing
    • 4. Peirce IV bag w/ tubing in a sterile manner
    • 5. Fill drip chamber half full
    • 6. Open flow-regulationscrew to remove all air from tubing
    • 7. Close flow-reg screw

    • 1. Get Consent
    • 2. Record pt vitals
    • 3. slightly recline pt
    • 4. scan pt arm for veins and apply tournequet (occlude vein but not artery)
    • 5. ask pt to hang arm below heart--distends veins
    • 6 ask pt to pump fist -->keep closed when starting IV
    • 7. put gloves on
    • 8. select site and clean w/ alchohol
  4. Sometimes venodilation may need some help. name 4 ways.
    • 1. lightly tapping
    • 2. rubbing skin
    • 3. apply warm, moist heat
    • 4. N2O (analgesia too)
  5. 4 steps as you are poking
    • 1. bevel facing up
    • 2. stabilize skin at selected site
    • 3. enter skin at 45o angleXX (more like 20o) paralleling to vein
    • *may feel a "popping' sensation => backflow
    • 4. Flatten needle angle and advance needle
  6. after poke (5)
    • 1. remove tournequet
    • 2. hook up to IV tubing and open flow-reg screw. (YOU NEED HELP b/c you are stabilizing needle)
    • 3.secure w/ tape
    • 4. apply immobilizer if necessary
    • 5. place additional monitors if necessary and admin drugs.
  7. stop IV (3)
    • 1. stop fluid flow- close fluid reg screw
    • 2. place gauze over entry site & remove needle
    • 3. apply finger pressure for 3-5 mins
    • (avoid hematoma formation)
