    • Cyanide Antidote Kit
    • (Amyl Nitrite, Sodium Nitrite, Sodium Thiosulfate)
  2. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Class
    Antidote
  3. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Mechanism of Action
    • Amyl Nitrite: affinity for cyanide ions; reacts with hemoglobin to form methemoglobin (low toxicity)
    • Sodium Nitrite: same as amyl nitrite
    • Sodium Thiosulfate: produces thiocyanate, which is then excreted
  4. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Indications
    Cyanide or hydrocyanic acid poisoning
  5. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Contraindications
    Not applicable
  6. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Adverse Reactions
Excessive doses of amyl nitrate and sodium nitrate can produce severe, life-threatening methemoglobinemia. Use only recommended doses
  7. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Drug Interactions
    None
  8. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    How Supplied
    • Pledgettes: 12 Amyl Nitrate inhalants (0.3mL) (crushable ampules in a sleeve of similar to ammonia inhalants)
    • Ampules: 2 of Sodium Nitrate USP injection, 300mg in 10mL of water for injection
    • Vials: 2 of Sodium Thiosulfate USP injection, 12.5g in 50mL of water for injection
  9. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Dosage and Administration
    Adult
    • Amyl nitrate: breathe 30 seconds out of every minute
    • Sodium Thiosulfate and sodium nitrate: IV per antidote kit directions
  10. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Dosage and Administration
    Pediatric
    Same as Adult
  11. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Duration of Action
    • Onset: Variable
    • Peak Effect: Variable
    • Duration: Variable
  12. Cyanide Antidote Kit

    Special Considerations
Cyanide poisoning must be recognized quickly and treated quickly; if pulse persists, even in presence of apnea, prognosis is good with treatment. The antidote kit must be used in conjunction with administration of oxygen.
