  1. ankylosis
    stiff joint condition
  2. arthritis
inflammation of the joints characterized by pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and limitation of motion

    • Includes:
    • - osteoarthritis (OA)
    • - degenerative arthritis
    • - degenerative joint disease (DJD)
    • - rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
    • - gouty arthritis
  3. osteoarthritis (OA)
most common form of arthritis that especially affects weight-bearing joints; characterized by the erosion of articular cartilage
  4. rheumatoid arthritis
most crippling form of arthritis characterized by a chronic, systemic inflammation most often affecting joints and synovial membranes causing ankylosis and deformity
  5. gouty arthritis
acute attacks of arthritis usually in a single joint caused by hyperuricemia (an excessive level of uric acid in the blood)
  6. bony necrosis
dead bone tissue from loss of blood supply such as can occur after a fracture
  7. bunion
swelling of the joint at the base of the great toe caused by inflammation of the bursa
  8. bursitis
    inflammation of a bursa
  9. carpal tunnel syndrome
condition that results from compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel at the wrist, characterized by pain, numbness, and tingling in the wrist and fingers and weak grip; commonly seen as a result of cumulative trauma of surrounding tendons
  10. chondromalacia
    softening of cartilage
  11. epiphysitis
inflammation of epiphyseal regions of the long bone
  12. fracture (Fx)
    a broken or cracked bone

    • Includes:
    • - closed fracture
    • - open fracture
    • - simple fracture
    • - complex fracture
    • - fracture line
    • - comminuted fractue
    • - greenstick fracture
  13. closed fracture
a broken bone with no open wound
  14. open fracture
a compound fracture; a broken bone with an open wound
  15. simple fracture
a nondisplaced fracture involving one fracture line that does not require extensive treatment to repair
  16. complex fracture
a displaced fracture that requires manipulation or surgery to repair
  17. fracture line
    line made by broken bone
  18. comminuted fracture
    broken in many little pieces
  19. greenstick fracture
bending and incomplete break of a bone-most often seen in children
  20. herniated disk
protrusion of a degenerated or fragmented intervertebral disk so that the nucleus pulposus protrudes, causing compression on the nerve root
  21. myeloma
    bone marrow tumor
  22. mytositis
    inflammation of muscle
  23. myoma
    muscle tumor

    • Includes:
    • - leiomyoma
    • - leiomyosarcoma
    • - rhabdomyoma
    • - rhabdomyosarcoma
  24. leiomyoma
    smooth muscle tumor
  25. leiomyosarcoma
    malignant smooth muscle tumor
  26. rhabdomyoma
    skeletal muscle tumor
  27. rhabdomyosarcoma
    malignant skeletal muscle tumor
  28. muscular dystrophy
a category of genetically transmitted diseases characterized by progressive atrophy of skeletal muscles
  29. osteoma
    bone tumor
  30. osteosarcoma
    type of malignant bone tumor
  31. osteomalacia
disease marked by softening of the bone caused by calcium and vitamin D deficiency

    • Includes:
    • - rickets
  32. rickets
    osteomalacia in children
  33. osteomyelitis
infection of bone and bone marrow causing inflammation
  34. osteoporosis
condition of decreased bone density and increased porosity, causing bones to become brittle and liable to fracture
  35. spinal curvatures
    kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis
  36. kyphosis
abnormal posterior curvature of the thoracic spine (humpback condition)
  37. lordosis
abnormal anterior curvature of the lumbar spine (sway-back condition)
  38. scoliosis
abnormal lateral curvature of the spine
  39. spondylolisthesis
forward slipping of a lumbar vertebra
  40. spondylosis
stiff, immobile condition of vertebrae due to joint degeneration
  41. sprain
injury to a ligament caused by joint trauma but without joint dislocation or fracture
  42. subluxation
    a partial dislocation
