Benzodiazepine that hasstrong hypnotic and amnesic properties
Mechanism of Action
Benzodiazepines bind to specific sites on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) Type A receptors within the brain. GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. Increased GABA levels cause sedation.
Onset of Action:
Premedication before cardioversion, acute anxiety state, anticonvulsant, induction agent for RSI
Hypersensitivity to drug, narrow angle glaucoma, shock
Emergency resuscitative equipment available
Flumazenil should be available.
Dilute with NS or D5W before IV administration
Respiratory depression more common with Versed than with other benzodiazepines.
