    Anticonvulsant / Antidysrthythmic
  2. Description
    Long acting anticonvlsant and antidysrthythmic
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Produces a voltage and frequency dependant blockade of sodium channels in rapidly discharging nerve cells. Inhibits spread of seizure activity through motor cortex. Depresses spontaneous ventricular depolarization
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset:3-5 min

    • Peak:1-2 HR

    • Duration:Varies

    • Half-Life: 22hr

  5. Indications
    Major motor seizures, Status epilepticus, digitalis toxicity dysrhythmias
  6. Contraindications
    Dysrhythmias not caused by digitalis toxicity, High-degree heart block, hypersensitivity to drug
  7. Precautions
    Should not be administered with glucose solutions, diluted in NS, monitor EKG
  8. Side Effects
    Dysrhythmias, Local venous irritation, itching, CNS depression, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, hypotension, rash, nausea, vomiting
  9. Adult Dose
    • Status epilepticus:150-250 mg (10-15 mg/kg) not to exceed 50 mg/min
    • Digitalis toxicity:100 mg over 5 min until the dysrthythmia is suppressed, max dose given, or CNS depression occurs
  10. Pedi-Dose
    • Status Epilepiticus:8-10 mg/kg IV

    • Digitalis Toxicity:3-5 mg/kg IV over 100 minutes

  11. Max Dose
    1000mg
