    • Variable stroke positive displacement pump, pumps 2135th hydraulic fluid to the rams and cylinders
  22. What is the purpose of the Trick Wheel?
    Allows steering capabilities in AFT-steering, 1 for each steering unit. Only qualified aft-steering helmsman and auxiliary div personnel can steer from aft steering.
  23. What is the purpose of the Ram Assembly?
    We have 4, 2 for each steering unit. Port/stbd, configured in a push/pull configuration attached to the yoke that turns the rudder.
  24. What is the purpose of the Emergency Steering Hand pumps?
    We have two, used only in emergency situations to move the rudder.
  25. What is the purpose of the Manual Transfer Valve?
    Allows the selection of steering unit to be used, Port, stbd or locked. Locked position will be used only when steering units are de-energized

    Located on the bridge, uses an IC circuit to send an electrical signal to aft-steering where it is converted into mechanical motion of the rudder in aft-steering
  27. Describe the operation of the Trick Wheel.
    Located in aft-steering, 1 for each steering unit, allows the steering of the ship from aft-steering.
  28. Describe the operation of the Hand Pumps.
    60 turns using 1 pump or 30 turms using 2 pumps equal 1 degree rudder movement.

    Reduces the ship's effect on the earth's magnetic field, therefore reducing possibility of detection by magnet sensitive ordnance equipment such as mines.

    BLR is equipped with type Solid State magnetic (SSM) automatic degaussing equipment. This equipment consists of a control switchboard, a remote control unit, and a power supply for each of the degaussing coils.

    Provides status indicators and a heading switch for emergency manual operation from **pilot house**.
  78. What is the function of the Control Switch board?
    Contains operator controls, control circuits, and status indicators such as magnetic heading, and DC amp meters. Switchboard is located in the same space as LC 21/22/44 next to CCC office.
  79. What is the function of the Power Supply Units?
    Amplify control signals from the switchboard and provide DC current to its associated degaussing coil. There are four power supplies, also located in the same space as LC 21/22/44 next to CCC office.
  80. What is the function of the M coil?
    M (main) coil encircles the ship in a horizontal plane near the waterline. The M coil produces a magnetic filed that counteracts the ships vertical permanent and induced magnetism.
  81. What is the function of the FP-QP coil?
    Produces a magnetic field that counteracts the ships longitudinal permanent magnetism. Also provides some aid to the M-coil in counteracting the vertical induced magnetism. Split into 2 coils connected in series. FP encircles the fwd 1/3 and qp the aft 1/3 of the ship n the 2nd deck.

    Produces a magnetic field that counteracts the ships longitudinal induced magnetism. Field strength depends on ships heading and magnetic latitude. Split into 2 coils connected in series. FI encircles the fwd 1/3 and QI encircles aft of the ship on 2nd deck
  83. What is the function of the A coil?
    A coil (arthwartship) coil has loops in the vertical fore-and-aft planes. The A-coil produces a magnetic field that counteracts the ships arthwartship permanent and induced magnetism. Arthwartship induced magnetism changed when the ship changes heading, magnetism latitude, or rolls.
