  1. Matter-
anything that has mass and takes up space.
  2. Atom-
small particle that makes up most types of matter.
  3. Law of Conservation of Matter-
matter is not created or destroyed-- it only changes form.
  4. Electrons-
    negatively charged particles.
  5. Nucleus-
    central part of an atom.
  6. Protons-
    positively charged particles.
  7. Neutrons-
    uncharged particles.
  8. Elements-
matter made of only one kind of atom.
  9. Atomic Number-
number of prorons in the nucleus of each atom of a given element; is the top number in the periodic table.
  10. Isotopes-
atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
  11. Mass Number-
nunber of protons pus the number of neutrons an atom contains.
  12. Atomic Mass-
weighted average mass of the isotopes of an element.
  13. Metals-
shiny or matallic luster and are good conducters of heat and electricity.
  14. Nonmetals-
elements that are usually dull in apperance and are poor conducters of heat and electricity.
  15. Metalloids-
elements that have characteristics of metals and nonmetals.
  16. Substance-
matter that has the same composition and properties throughout.
  17. Compounds-
substances whose smallest unit is made up of atoms of more than one element bonded together.
  18. Mixture-
two or more substances that come together but don't combine to make a new substance.
