  1. Functional Class
    benzodiazepine (short acting)
  2. MOA
    • 1) This short acting benzo intensifies activity of GABA
    • 2) Has CNS depressant, anticonvulsant and anterograde amnestic properties
    • 3) Relaxes skeletal muscles and induces sleep
  3. Indications
    • Seizures (status epilepticus)
    • Induce sedation prior to painful procedures
  4. Contraindications
    Hypersensitivity to benzos, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, coma, shock, acute alcohol intoxication
  5. Precautions
    Use with caution in patients with COPD, CHF and/or renal failure
  6. Side Effects
    • 1) N/V, PVCs, hypotention
    • 2) Blurred vision, retrograde amnesia
    • 3) Excessive amnesia, apnea
  7. Interactions
    • 1) Prolonged resp depression when given with other CNS depressants such as alcohol
    • 2) cimeidine (Tagament) increases plasma levels of midazolam
  8. Dose/Route
    Adult: 1.0-2.5mg slow IVP or IM q 5 mins, until seizure stops

    • Pedi: 0.1 mg/kg slow IVP or IM max single dose 6 mg.
    • May repeat once after 5 mins
  9. Pharmacokinetics
    • Onset = 3-5 mins IV
    • Duration = less than 2 hours
    • Half-Life = 1-4 hours
