  1. Newborn period, 0-2 weeks
    • Sleeps and suckles, crawls to warmth, mother licks genitals to stimulate defecation
    • 10-14 days EYES OPEN- poor vision
    • Gentle handling
  2. Transitional Period, 2-3 wks
    • Teeth appear
    • Can walk and lap liquids
    • Ears open end of 3rd week- HEARING
    • Smell develops
    • Puppy urinates and defecates independently-
    • Pick up gently every day and hold in different positions
  3. Socialization Period, 3-12 weeks
    Toys introduced-
    Experience humans, dogs, sounds and environmental stimulus
    First Stage is 3-5 wks
    • 3-4 wks -sight, hearing and smell developing
    • Solid food
    • Bark, wag tail, play bite other puppies
    • Leaves sleeping area to urinate upon waking
    • 4-5 wks - PAWS, BARES TEETH, GROWLS, CHASES, PLAYS PREY-Kill games (Head shake)
    • Carries objects in mouth
    • BITE INHIBITION
    • Mother Prevents Feeding at will
  4. Second Stage 5-8 wks-
    Week 7 *-
    ready for new home- curious and exploring
    • Weaning begins
    • 28 teeth at 8 wks.
    • Ears and facial expressions
    • More coordinated use of eyes and ears
    • Group play
    • Introduce variety of toys
    • to stimulate mental growth- introduce stairs, noises, textured surfaces
  5. Socialization Stage Third Stage 8-12 weeks
    • Exploration away from nest
    • Strong desire to please, seeks attachments
    • Can become FEARFUL of things they have not encountered before
    • PLAY
  6. Juvenile Period 3-6 months
    • Dependent on human, eager to please
    • 4 months- lose puppy teeth and get 42 adult teeth
    • Teething so mouthing and chewing to explore environment
    • Use games and rewards based training
  7. Adolescence, 6 months - 1 year/18 months
    • Independent
    • Sexual maturity - females come into heat
    • Chewing is priority at this stage
  8. Maturity - 1 yr- 18 months for larger breeds
    Youthful confidence, but inexperienced
  9. Social Maturity 18, months- 3 yrs
    • Physically and socially mature
    • Character is formed
