  1. Assesses 5 biophysical variables
    • Fetal breathing
    • Fetal movement
    • Fetal tone
    • Fluid assessment
    • Fetal reaction
  2. Fetal breathing (BPP) 2 & 0
    • Score 2
    • One or more episodes lasting 30 sec. in 30 min

    • Score 0
    • Not present or not lasting 30 sec.
  3. Fetal Movement (BPP) 2 & 0
    • Score 2
    • Three or more body/limb movements in 30 mins

    • Score 0
    • Two or fewer body/limb movements in 30 minutes
  4. Fetal tone (BPP) 2 & 0
    • Score 2
    • One or more episodes of active flexion/extension

    • Score 0
    • Slow extension wiht return to partial flexion, or movement is absent

    flexion - making a muscle
  5. Fluid assessment (BPP) 2 & 0
    • Score 2
    • One or more pockets of amniotic fluid 1cm in two perpendicular planes

    • Score 0
    • No pocket, or no pocket 1cm in two perpendicular planes

Perpendicular - two lines or planes to each other if they form congruent adjacent angles (Tshape)

    Pockets of amniotic fluid -
  6. Fetal reaction (BPP) 2 & 0
    • Score 2
    • Reactive NST

    • Score 0
    • Nonreactive NST

NST - Nonstress Test - a test attaching a belt to the woman's abdomen to measure fetal HR and another belt to measure contractions

Reactive - indicates the blood flow and oxygen to the fetus is adequate

Nonreactive - indicates need additional testing whether the test is truly a poor oxygenation, or whether there are any other reasons nonreactivity.
  7. An assessment of ONLY TWO of the variables of BPP is
    MBPP modified biophysical profile
  8. The healthcare provider should be contacted if there are
    • Fewer than 10 movements in 12hrs
    • No movements for 8hrs
    • Sudden violent movements followed by the reduced movements
  9. A procedure in which the needle is inserted through the abomen into the amniotic sac is

    - withdrawn and sent to the lab for testing
  10. A severe form of nausea and vomiting occuring during pregnancy that usually persists beyond the 1st trimester
    Hyperemesis gravidarum
  11. This happens as a cause of increased estrogen level, gonadotrophin production, or trophoblastic activity.
    Hyperemesis gravidarum
  12. Is the spontaneous (natural) or induced (elective) termination of pregnancy before viability of the fetus is
  13. A spontaneous abortion is also called a
  14. Occurs when a fertalized ovum implants outside the uterine cavity
    Ectopic pregnancy
  15. Memory Trick:
Three classic sx's of ectopic pregnancy
    • V - vaginal bleeding
    • A - Amenorrhea
    • P - Pain
  16. A trophoblastic disease, or molar pregnancy is an abnormality of the placenta
    Hydatidiform mole
  17. Convulsions - grand mal
  18. Is an oversimulation of the clotting process
    DIC dissminated intravascular coagulation
  19. HELLP sydrome stands for
    • Hemolysis
    • Elevated
    • Liver enzymes
    • Low
    • Platelet count

platelet count is a test to measure how many platelets you have in your blood - which help blood clot, they are smaller than red and white blood cells.
  20. Normal blood glucose levels
  21. Phenylketonuria is a genetic disorder/inherited what can be done as a preventative measure
    Control by diet
  22. TORCH stands for
    • TO - Toxoplasmosis
    • R - Rubella
    • C - CMV cytomegalovirus
    • H - Herpes Type II
  23. What must be administered within 72 hours of the infant's birth if the mother is Rh - and the fetus is Rh +?
    • RhoGAM
    • NM - negative mother
    • PF or PB- positive fetus or baby

    • It is also recommended that
    • RhoGAM be given at 28 weeks gestation and after birth, also given after abortion NEVER GIVEN TO AN Rh Postive mother
  24. Is a labor that begins after viability but before 37 weeks gestation

    Note: Ethans birth
