Describe Hyperthyroidism (Thyrotoxicosis)?
due to increased levels of circulating TH
What is Primary Hyperthyroidism?
Excess TH is made and secreted by the thyroid gland
What causes primary hyperthyroidism?
- 1. Graves disease
- 2. toxic multinodular goiter
- 3. solitary hyperfunctioning noules
- 4. follicular thyroid carcinoma
- 5. ingestion of excess TH medication (thyrotoxicosis factitia)
rare but caused by TSH-secreting pituitary adenomas
